This breakout session includes key ideas about assessing clients’ current motivation for change and meeting him or her where they are. It asks the question, “how do we invite and enter change talk and tip the motivational scales in the direction of change?” Steenbergh and Daugherty offer specific principles for motivation-oriented discussion and offer video demonstrations of these principles.
Dr. Douglas Daugherty is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with more than 20 years of clinical experience. He is a Professor of Psychology and Addictions Counselor at Indiana Wesleyan University, while serving as a program evaluator for several problem-solving courts and treatment programs. Dr. Daugherty also provides clinical supervision, assessment of missionary candidates and other consultation services. His current research interests include positive psychology, spiritual formation and philosophy of addiction. He is the founder of Grace House for Recovery, a faith-based recovery home in Marion, Indiana.
Tim Steenbergh, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology at Indiana Wesleyan University and co-founder of LifeData, LLC. In his role as a professor, he is committed to helping students understand the unique purposes God has for their lives, and the importance of developing their gifts for His kingdom. Dr. Steenbergh and his partners at LifeData have been creating new smartphone technology that allows researchers, pastors, and other professionals to better understand and encourage growth in the lives of those they serve.
